Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1 – Select a Project and The Media
Log in to the Filio Web App and select the project containing the media you want to export.
From the Media section, use the checkboxes to select one or multiple photos or videos.
The number of selected media items appears in the action bar above the media list.
Step 2 – Open Download Options and Select KMZ Export
After selecting the media, click the Download button in the top action bar.
The Save Selection As window opens. Select:
**Export Media Map (KMZ)**
Before continuing, you can also:
* Click Add Customized Watermarks to Media if the exported media requires watermarks
* Choose where to save the exported file:
* Your Computer
* OneDrive
* Google Drive
* Dropbox
After selecting the export option and destination, click Next.
Step 3 – Choose Whether to Include Map Layers
Filio will ask whether you want to include map layers with the selected media.
Choose one of the following:
**Media Only**
Exports the selected photos and videos as a Google Earth KMZ file without additional map layers. This option is useful for quick sharing, location-based media review, or backup.
**Media with Map Layers**
Includes selected KML, KMZ, or GeoJSON layers in the same KMZ file. This option is useful for inspections, reports, location-based documentation, and project handoff.
After selecting an option, click Next.
Step 4 – Choose the Media Details to Include
The Choose Media Details window allows you to control what information appears with each media item in the exported KMZ file.
Use the search bar or browse the available field categories.
Available options may include:
**Media Information**
* Description
* Media Name
* AI Caption
* Video Transcription
**Media Details**
* Date Taken
* Time Taken
* Taken By
* Bearing
* Latitude
* Longitude
* Elevation
**Tags and AI Information**
* Tags
* AI Labels
**Additional Information**
* Media Type
* GPS Precision
* Timestamp
Log in to the Filio Web App and open the project containing the media you want to export.
From the Media section, use the checkboxes to select one or multiple photos or videos.
The number of selected media items appears in the action bar above the media list.
Step 5 – Save, Open, or Share the KMZ File
Filio generates the KMZ file using the selected media and information.
Depending on the destination selected earlier, you can save the file to your computer or connected cloud storage.
The exported file can then be:
* Opened in Google Earth
* Shared with a client or project partner
* Sent to a team member
* Stored as a location-based media record
* Used during inspections, reviews, or project handoffs
* Uploaded as a Custom Map Layer in Filio
Step 6 – Upload the KMZ as a Custom Map Layer in Filio
To display the exported KMZ inside a Filio project, open the project map and click Custom Layer from the map controls.
The Map Layers window opens.
From here, you can:
* Choose a base map:
* Normal
* Satellite
* Terrain
* Hybrid
* Click Browse Your File
* Drag and drop the file from your computer
* Upload supported KML, KMZ, or GeoJSON files
Step 7 – Select and Apply the Uploaded Layer
Select the checkbox beside the uploaded layer. You can also adjust the Layer Opacity to control how strongly the custom layer appears over the base map.
Click Apply to display the layer on the project map.
Step 8 – Review Exported Media on the Map
After applying the layer, the exported media appears at its recorded map locations.
Media thumbnails may appear above the directional or location markers, making it easier to visually identify each photo or video.
Click a media marker or thumbnail to review available information, such as:
* Media preview
* Description
* Media Name
* Selected metadata
* Open in Viewer option
This creates an interactive location-based media view that can support field review, project documentation, inspections, and team collaboration.
Tips and Warnings
- Use Media Only for quick sharing or a simple media backup.
- Use Media with Map Layers when project boundaries, GIS information, or other location layers are important.
- Select only the media details needed by the recipient.
- Include descriptions, dates, coordinates, and Custom Fields when the KMZ will be used for inspections or project handoff.
- Add customized watermarks before exporting when ownership, dates, or other identifying details must remain visible.
- Review the uploaded layer’s opacity to keep both the base map and media locations easy to read.
- Only the selected media is included in the exported KMZ file.
- Media should contain valid location information to appear accurately on the map.
- Some selected fields may appear blank when the original media does not contain that information.
- Consider whether tags, coordinates, Custom Fields, or other project information should be shared with external recipients.
- Filio supports KML, KMZ, and GeoJSON files as Custom Map Layers.
