subject context, and the correct plan reference. Together, they let someone who was not there understand the observation.

A position is not a viewing direction

Imagine an inspector standing at a corridor junction. One photo faces a fire door; another faces a service cupboard behind them. The same camera position is relevant to both, but the direction tells the reviewer which subject to expect. A subject label then explains why the photo was taken.

Do not confuse the camera's position with the photographed object's position. Placing a record on a drawing is useful only when the team understands what that point represents. Establish a consistent convention and carry it into the handoff.

Esri's oriented imagery documentation distinguishes camera location from orientation attributes such as heading and field of view. The same distinction helps a reviewer read a plan-linked photo: the point says where; direction helps explain what is in view.

<picture></picture>

Choose a dependable plan reference

Start with the correct project, level, and plan revision. Identify a real feature that you can match confidently between the space and the drawing, such as a particular doorway or corridor junction. Repeated rooms and similar-looking openings deserve extra attention.

Do not compensate for an uncertain reference by adding more photo markers. If the starting context is wrong, additional records can make the mistake look more convincing. Resolve the reference first or document the uncertainty and arrange a check.

Keep orientation explicit

Before beginning a route, identify how the plan is oriented relative to the space. Screen-up is not automatically the direction in which the person is facing. Review the actual reference features rather than assuming the display orientation establishes a compass direction.

Where the software requires setup positions, follow its current instructions and identify the physical positions deliberately. A setup segment and a later photo route have different jobs: the first establishes a reference for the workflow; the second documents conditions. Do not describe the setup distance as the required interval between every photo.

<picture></picture>

Build a sequence someone else can follow

Plan a route around the review task, not around an arbitrary number of images. At a transition, capture enough context for someone to recognize how one location relates to the next. At a detail, include a wider reference view or a clear subject description so the detail does not become detached from the space.

This is a documentation sequence, not automatically a photogrammetry source set. Photogrammetry has its own requirements for connected visual coverage. A route designed to explain observations should not be presented as proof that the same photographs will produce a complete 3D model.

Name meaningful changes in context: another room, another level, a different plan, or a return to an area later in the day. A continuous path graphic is not a substitute for those distinctions. Keep the record's identity understandable even when the plan is not open.

Review the marker and the photograph together

A useful review opens the image alongside its plan context. Does the scene match the expected room? Does the viewing direction correspond to the visible subject? Does the sequence make sense through the doorway or junction? Those checks can reveal a mismatch that is easy to miss when reviewing only the markers.

If the context is wrong or unclear, use the supported correction workflow and recheck the result. Do not silently move a point to make a route look tidy. A correction should improve the association with the observed location, not hide an uncertainty.

<picture></picture>

Review after an interruption

After a pause, a change of area, or a restarted session, recheck the plan and physical reference. Follow the product's current instructions if a new setup is needed.

If the expected result does not match the space, stop relying on it until the discrepancy is understood. A precise-looking marker is not evidence of a tested positioning tolerance. Keep an explanatory note and supporting observations when the location cannot yet be confirmed.

Make the handoff useful outside the capture session

The reviewer needs more than the route. Keep the project and level, relevant plan revision, photo subject, available capture context, and any unresolved placement question together. Give the recipient an approved way to access both the image and its reference context.

A photo sequence records the observations made, not every surface or event along the route. If an area was skipped or inaccessible, say so.

For the drawing side of that relationship, the Filio Plan Sheet guide explains its documented setup and management workflow. For the wider record system, searchable construction project records explains why useful retrieval depends on preserved context.

Where Filio Walking Placement fits

Filio's Walking Placement guide describes a Plan Sheet setup with a start and end reference, directional photo placement, and tools for reviewing or correcting a marker and its direction. The guide is the place for product steps; the documentation principles here explain what the resulting association needs to communicate.

Filio describes Walking Placement as Walking (SLAM). SLAM—simultaneous localization and mapping—is a technical approach for estimating a moving device’s position and orientation while mapping its surroundings. In this workflow, the practical review stays on the Plan Sheet: does each photo’s marker and viewing direction make sense? The term does not by itself imply survey-level accuracy or a particular SLAM implementation.

Before field use, check the current product instructions for setup, supported devices, and how to review or correct a placement. A plan-linked record remains something to review, not a positioning guarantee.

CHECK BEFORE YOU SHARE

Location:

Can the reviewer identify the correct project, level, and plan?

Position:

Is it clear what the marker represents, and does it match the documented reference?

Direction:

Does the photograph agree with the indicated view?

Context:

Do subjects, transitions, and omissions make sense without the photographer explaining them?

Follow-up:

Are unresolved placement questions explicit, with a responsible person and next action?

Common questions

Does a floor-plan marker prove precise indoor location?

No. Its usefulness depends on the placement method, reference, and review. An accuracy claim requires evidence specific to the product and operating conditions.

Does every photo need the same spacing?

Not as a general documentation rule. Choose observations for the task, and follow the product's current setup instructions. A setup distance is not automatically a photo-spacing rule.

Can I use a route as a 3D reconstruction plan?

Not without separately planning the source coverage needed for reconstruction.
